Yorkshire has many beautiful rivers flowing through its Dales and Eastfield Lodge sits just above the most significant of these in Wensleydale. The River Ure is 74 miles long from its source to the point it changes its name to the River Ouse and then extends a further 55 miles to become the longest river in the United Kingdom.
“So let’s get on it” I said to Henry and we headed off to find the ORCA Canoe Building workshops just on the border between Cumbria and Yorkshire. It took us an hour to drive there and we were met by Steve who owns and started the business and delivers the workshops. He is obviously a creative, imaginative and passionate man in the world of hand built Canadian boats and his enthusiasm was infectious.
River Mountain Experience
Henry and I were so impressed by the relaxed atmosphere, the personable delivery and the idea of such a hands-on activity resulting in your own hand painted individual craft ready for the water. How rewarding is that? Children of all ages were welcome and it seemed such a wonderful achievement to do together. It is then possible, having made the boat, to get some skills lessons from Justin or to bring your boat to Eastfield Lodge and join the Paddle and Picnic trip from Ripon to Boroughbridge – I can hardly contain my excitement! So why am I sitting around on this lovely and surprisingly comfortable chair when there is so much to do!
