And now for something completely different… winter walking in Yorkshire is pictureseque, bracing, healthy and thoroughly enjoyable but add a fleecy, four legged, rare animal to the equation and it becomes a perfect Birthday experience.
Henry, the Birthday Boy, was joined by a group of intrepid friends to drive over the snow covered dales to Kiln Farm to meet our obscure trek companions happily munching on hay. Each llama or alpaca has a unique personality and they are sensitive creatures needing to be carefully matched to their human hiker. The only answer was a speed dating process! We learnt about the animals quirky ways as Charlotte, our guide, quickly sussed out our similar strange characters and matched Henry and Penny immediately to Toby, “the Confused One!” Tacked up and raring to go, the train of fluffy mammals and their apprehensive handlers headed off around the lanes and fields of Nidderdale, one of Yorkshire’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With names such as Rosebud, Dobby and Noodle, the day with these animals was filled with fun and laughter. It was a cold and a muddy day in February but the fresh air and bonding warmed us up and was further achieved with hot chocolate, tea and cake on our return to the barns. The photo opportunities were endless as very soon we all seemed to start resembling our long eared buddies. After heart wrenching farewells, we hot footed it to the local hostelry for the Six Nations rugby, a roaring fire and pint of Wensleydale ale.
Well done Yorkshire – more wonderful surprises and first class days out in the Dales.
