Enjoy three days in the Dales National Park on the National Navigation Award Scheme (Silver)
Last year on Buckden Pike (702m), I encountered very difficult conditions and all so suddenly just as I neared the summit. Thick fog, high winds and rain made it a hostile place to be and I was glad to have packed my map and compass, but mostly relieved that I felt confident to find my route in poor visibility and competent enough to navigate myself off the mountain in these unpredictable conditions. I was able to relax and enjoy the walk, even if not the views.
After our highly successful Bronze Navigation & First Aid Course delivered in March this year, we have now secured dates to deliver a Silver Navigation Course in October 2018. All instruction is professionally delivered with 2 instructors with a group of up to 12 people each. The course involves both theory and practical providing the skills and practice time to build confidence when out walking in the open country. The Silver National Navigation Award develops existing basic navigation skills. It adds skills required to navigate to features and places some distance from paths and tracks and teaches accurate compass work. There is no First Aid element available within the time but please speak to your instructor if this is of interest.
Visit England awards the house with 4 stars and TripAdvisor awarded Eastfield Lodge with its certificate of excellence for the seventh year running in 2018. You can read the wonderful guest reviews on Tripadvisor by clicking here. The lounge is perfect for relaxing with fellow walkers, whilst the dining room has hosted many a sociable breakfast and dinner over the years. In addition, there is a Maps & Information Room, a drying room and ample parking.
The itinerary is available on the tab above.
This course is running from 29th October – 2nd November 2018. To book a place, please contact Viv at the Collett’s Mountain Holidays on 01799 513331 or Henry & Penny at Eastfield Lodge on 01969 623196 – Otherwise, please make an enquiry online by clicking here.
Eastfield Lodge Silver Navigation Course
Monday – Arrival
All arrive at Eastfield Lodge in the afternoon for homemade cookies and tea in the lounge. Join us in the evening for pre-dinner drinks and delicious canapes before a two-course dinner to get to know each other better. David and Penny will enlighten you on the details of the course and Penny will be on hand for any questions throughout dinner. The weather may have an influence on the order in which we do the course but this itinerary should be a good guide.
Basic Navigational Skills
After a good breakfast, we will cover a small amount of map theory before heading off locally into the Dales to start our navigation syllabus. This includes maps and scale, grid references, reading the land features and contours, orientation specific skills with ample opportunity to practice and gain confidence. With a maximum of 12 guests to two instructors we should be able to hone these skills. Packed lunches will be enjoyed on the hills before further consolidation around the table at the end of the day with tea and cake.
Evening – Tonight a three-course dinner will be served with wine included to relax after the concentration of the day.
Further Navigational Theory & Skills
Breakfast will be cleared to allow the dining room to be transformed into a learning centre which will provide the venue for both practical map reading, a look at equipment as well as navigational techniques. After route planning, there will be a chance to refresh the skills learnt on Tuesday as well as learn new skills of accurately measuring distance, timing and pacing, relocation and direction finding. Legislation and access rights will also be covered before going out into the hills. Lunch that day will either consist of a packed lunch or a buffet depending on our expected location at that time.
Evening – Tonight a two-course dinner will be served with wine included to relax after the concentration of the day.
Silver Navigational Skills
After breakfast you will head out into a remote but beautiful area of the Dales to put all you have learnt during the previous two days into practice. Certification will follow before an optional trip to sample some local Yorkshire gin or a pint of Wensleydale Ale.
Evening – For our last evening, Henry will arrange for us to dine at a local restaurant in the market town (Pay individually) where you can celebrate your success and plan your next hill climb!
A leisurely breakfast before departure.
