Enjoy three days in the Dales National Park on the National Navigation Award Scheme (Bronze)
Last year at the base of Buckden Pike (702m), I encountered very difficult conditions and all so suddenly as I neared the summit. Thick fog, high winds and rain made it a hostile place to be and I was glad to have packed my map and compass, but mostly relieved that I felt confident to find my route in poor visibility and competent enough to navigate myself off the mountain in these unpredictable conditions. I was able to relax and enjoy the walk, even if not the views.
After our highly successful first Bronze Navigation & First Aid Course delivered in March 2018, we have now arranged dates to deliver a Silver Navigation Course in October 2018 and the second bronze Award in March 2019. All instruction is professionally delivered with 2 instructors with a group of up to 8 people each. The course involves both theory and practical providing the skills and practice time to build confidence when out walking on paths and tracks in the country. The Bronze National Navigation Award is a practical hands-on award. It is aimed at people with no navigation experience whether you are new to the outdoors or have been relying on others, guidebooks or easy well-defined routes. The syllabus teaches navigation in the countryside using paths tracks and other linear features. Basic map interpretation and compass work is also included. The First Aid element of the programme is delivered for a full day between the two days of navigation and is a stand alone Award. It builds the confidence to provide first aid treatment in the country and therefore is a scenario based course.
Most of our time is spent out in hills of magical Wensleydale but on our return each day you will find Eastfield Lodge the ideal place to relax and unwind. Hosted charmingly by Henry Collett & Penny Knight, nothing is too much trouble and you will soon feel at home. Henry & Penny have taken the house to new heights in recent months, upgrading most of the eight en suite bedrooms and introducing delightful and unassuming hospitality touches, which make such a difference to your stay. We provide 2 and 3 course dinners, a hearty Yorkshire breakfast and packed lunches. All equipment and maps are supplied and, I suspect, there will be a good helping of laughter.
Visit England awards the house with 4 stars and TripAdvisor awarded Eastfield Lodge with its certificate of excellence for the seventh year running in 2018. You can read the wonderful guest reviews on Tripadvisor by clicking here. The lounge is perfect for relaxing with fellow walkers, whilst the dining room has hosted many a sociable breakfast and dinner over the years. In addition, there is a Maps & Information Room, a drying room and ample parking.
The itinerary is available on the tab above.
This course is running from 29th October – 2nd November 2018. To book a place, please contact Viv at the Collett’s Mountain Holidays on 01799 513331 or Henry & Penny at Eastfield Lodge on 01969 623196 – Otherwise, please make an enquiry online by clicking here.
Eastfield Lodge Navigation and First Aid Course
Monday – Arrival
All arrive at Eastfield Lodge in the afternoon for homemade cookies and tea in the lounge. Join us in the evening for pre-dinner drinks and delicious canapes before a two-course dinner to get to know each other better. David and Penny will enlighten you on the details of the course and be on hand for any questions throughout dinner. The weather may have an influence on the order in which we do the course but this itinerary should be a good guide.
Basic Navigational Skills
After a good breakfast, we will cover a small amount of map theory before heading off locally in the Dales to start our navigation syllabus. This includes maps and scale, grid references, reading the land features and contours, orientation specific skills with ample opportunity to practice and gain confidence. With a maximum of 8 guests to two instructors we should be able to hone these skills. Packed lunches will be enjoyed on the hills before further consolidation around the table at the end of the day with tea and cake.
Evening – Tonight a three-course dinner will be served with wine included to relax after the concentration of the day.
First Aid Training
Breakfast will be cleared to allow the dining room to be transformed into a first aid centre which will provide the venue for both theory and practical. In order to prepare you for incidents in the hills, the training will include some scenario based practical which, weather permitting, will take place outside. The first aid course will include dealing with incidents related to breathing, bleeding, breaks and burns. It will be an intense programme to cover in one day but with time to practice and discuss. Lunch that day will either consist of a packed lunch or a buffet depending on our expected location at that time.
Evening – Once bandages have been removed and splints safely stowed away, another delicious cake and hot showers are in order before a two-course supper is on offer and very much deserved.
Basic Navigational Skills
After a route planning session, there will be a chance to refresh the skills learnt on Tuesday as well as to learn new skills of accurately measuring distance, timing and pacing, relocating and direction finding. Later it will be necessary to finish in the “classroom” with a look at equipment, legislation and access rights and a summary of the syllabus. There will be opportunities for questions and discussion. Certification will follow before an optional trip to sample some local Yorkshire gin or a pint of Wensleydale Ale.
Evening – For our last evening, Henry will arrange for us to dine at a local restaurant in the market town (Pay individually) where you can celebrate your success and plan your next hill climb!
A leisurely breakfast before departure.
