Join us in Wensleydale over New Year for three stunning day walks
4 Nights at Eastfield Lodge, Our 4 star Walking Lodge in Wensleydale
3 Glorious Day Walks in the Dales National Park
Warm Hospitality, Excellent Cuisine, Delightful en suite bedrooms
You are invited to beautiful Wensleydale for a walking break in the Yorkshire Dales over New Year. Spend four nights at our luxurious guest house, Eastfield Lodge, which is 300 yards from the traditional market square of Leyburn, the principal town of Wensleydale and gateway to the Dales National Park. Read on…
Each day after a good breakfast, we will venture out on a beautiful walk. Over the three days we will walk in a variety of the Dales and these could include Wensleydale, Swaledale and Wharfedale. After each walk there is time to relax in the hospitable atmosphere and comfort of Eastfield Lodge, where we have 8 delightful en suite bedrooms, a cosy guest lounge and an attractive dining room.
Eastfield Lodge itself is a delight. It is hosted superbly by Henry Collett, Penny Knight and their small team of hosts – you will soon feel at home here. They have taken the house to new heights in recent months, upgrading most of the eight en suite bedrooms and introducing delightful and unassuming hospitality touches, which make such a difference to your stay. Consequently, Visit England awards the house with 4 stars and we have again reciend this year’s Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor. There is also an attractive lounge (with a woodburner, armchairs, sofas and piano), a bright and sunny breakfast and dining room, a map room and a drying room. (See the wonderful things people say about it on Tripadvisor by clicking here).
We meet at Eastfield Lodge the evening before the first walk. Guests get to know each other over a welcome drink and an informal two course supper. Four nights and three walks later – when everyone goes their separate ways after the final breakfast – it’s hard to believe that only four days previously everyone had been strangers.
Each day starts with an excellent hearty (or healthy) breakfast cooked by Henry. Then, armed with a good packed lunch, it’s off to the starting point of the first walk, which might be the doorstep of Eastfield Lodge or a short drive. If you thought Henry’s breakfast was good, wait till you try his homemade cakes, one of which is usually awaiting you on your return to the house after the walk, accompanied by a well-earned pot of tea or coffee.
In the evenings, guests relax in the comfort of the house or perhaps wander into the town for a pre-dinner drink before eating together around the same table. Henry and his small team serve an excellent two course supper on your first and second evenings, and a three course dinner on the final evening. On the fourth and final evening we eat out locally in a good restaurant and you pay for this individually. Also, the third and final walk of the break often features a pub lunch, for which guests pay individually.
New Year Walking Break Itinerary (This is typical but flexible to suit)
Here is an example of a recent walking break. The walks are always put together and hosted by our own walks organiser, who will join you at Eastfield Lodge during the walking break. Our host has yet to finalise the walking programme and each day will play to the abilities of the group. However this will give you an idea of the type of walks you can expect.
Arrival Day – New Year’s Eve
Meet at Eastfield Lodge in the afternoon for tea and cake in the lounge. A three course dinner may be followed by some light entertainment and will set you up for day one’s walk. If you are still on your feet at midnight join us for a glass of Prosecco to see in 2018.
Day 2 – New Year’s Day
Circular Walk taking in Castle Bolton, Carperby and Aysgarth Falls – 8 miles / 13 kms.
After a good breakfast, we will fill our flasks with warming drinks before heading off for the first walk. A steady introduction to the Dales with historic sites, stunning waterfalls, riverside walk, Yorkshire villages, open moorland and woodland so a great mix of terrain and places of interest within Wensleydale.
Evening – New Year’s Day. – Back at Eastfield Lodge, kick off your boots and relax in the lounge by the wood-burner, with tea and cake, before taking a hot shower. Then join us in the evening for pre-dinner drinks and canapes before a two course supper.
Fremington Ridgeline to Reeth – 10 miles / 16 kms
You will need your full Yorkshire breakfast today for this, the longest of the walk days. However the views, the variety and the rewards make it all well worth it. This route takes us from Langthwaite up to this natural viewpoint viewpoint looking down to the River Swale and across to Calver Hill. The grouse stick their distinctive heads up through the heather and the return walk runs alongside the water. Both Swaledale and Arkengarthdale are visited during the day.
Gunnerside Gill – 10 miles /16kms
The ridge can be hostile if the winds are high in which case we will visit the equally beautiful Gunnerside Gill with visible reminders of the lead mining industry in the area. Stunning views through narrow natural gullies and valleys make this a popular walking favourite, also in Swaledale.
Evening – Walking kit stowed away in the drying room, tea and cake and hot showers are in order before a two course supper with wine included which is now much deserved.
Horsehouse Circular Walk with or without Pennhill Beacon – 10 or 7 miles / 16 or 13 kms
This walk feels more remote and starts in open moorland, across farming land to the pretty village of Carlton. (An optional climb up to Pennhill Beacon can be discussed!) The route back to Horsehouse is beautiful along the River Cover in Coverdale.
The Leyburn Shawl (extended) – 8 miles / 13 kms
This historic and popular local walk runs along the top of the limestone crag to the village of Preston-Under-Scar and wends it’s way back low down in Wensleydale past Bolton Hall across pasture land to return to Leyburn.
The day depends on how tired you are feeling already and whether you are keen to leave the cars behind for the day as the Shawl walk means walking straight from the front door.
Evening – Henry will book you into a local restaurant for your last evening of the break where you can enjoy a meal together in Leyburn (pay individually.)
A leisurely breakfast before departure.
