Stay at Eastfield Lodge – charming hospitality, superb breakfasts and delightful en suite bedrooms.
Enjoy three glorious day walks in the Dales National Park
You are invited to beautiful Wensleydale for our September walking break in the Yorkshire Dales. Spend four nights at our luxurious guest house, Eastfield Lodge, which is 300 yards from the traditional market square of Leyburn, the principal town of Wensleydale and gateway to the Dales National Park.
Each day after a good breakfast, we will venture out on a beautiful walk. The break includes three of Wensleydale’s most stunning walks. After each walk there is time to relax in the hospitable atmosphere and comfort of Eastfield Lodge. We have eight delightful en suite bedrooms and a comfortable guest lounge, where cake and tea await our walkers in the afternoons.
Eastfield Lodge is a delight. Hosted charmingly by Henry Collett, nothing is too much trouble and you will soon feel at home here. Henry has taken the house to new heights in recent months, upgrading most of the eight en suite bedrooms and introducing delightful and unassuming hospitality touches, which make such a difference to your stay. Visit England awards the house with 4 stars and you can read the wonderful guest reviews on Tripadvisor by clicking here.
The lounge is perfect for relaxing with fellow walkers, whilst the bright and sunny dining room has hosted many a sociable breakfast and dinner over the years. In addition, there is a Maps & Information Room, a drying room and ample parking.
We meet at Eastfield Lodge the evening before the first walk. Guests get to know each other over a welcome drink and an informal two course supper. Four nights and three walks later – when everyone goes their separate ways – it’s hard to believe that only four days previously everyone had been strangers.
Each day starts with an excellent hearty (or healthy) breakfast cooked by Henry. Then, armed with a good packed lunch, it’s off to the starting point of the first walk, which might be the doorstep of Eastfield Lodge or a short drive.
In the evenings, guests relax in the comfort of the house or perhaps wander into town for a pre-dinner drink before eating together around the same table. Henry and his small team serve an excellent two course supper on your first and second evenings, and a three course dinner on the final evening. On the third evening we eat out locally in a good restaurant and you pay for this individually. Also, the third and final walk of the break features a pub lunch, for which guests pay individually.
Easter Walking Break Itinerary
The walks are always put together and hosted by our own walks organiser, who will join you at Eastfield Lodge during the walking break. Our host has yet to finalise the walking programme and each day will play to the strengths and weaknesses of the group. However this will give you an idea of the type of walks you can expect.
All meet at Eastfield Lodge in the afternoon for cake and tea in the lounge. In the evening, join us for pre-dinner drinks and canapes before a two course dinner.
Horsehouse Circular Walk – 8 miles / 13 kms.
This walk feels remote in little explored Coverdale away from usual Yorkshire visitor trail and starts in open moorland, across farming land to the pretty village of Carlton. (An optional climb up to Penhill Beacon can be discussed!) The route back to Horsehouse is beautiful along the River Cover and is a good way to ease into the break.
Evening – Returning to Eastfield Lodge, kick off your boots and relax with tea and cake. A three course dinner tonight with wine included will set you up for another days walking.
Gunnerside Gill – 10 miles / 16 kms
You will need your full Yorkshire breakfast today for this, the longest of the walk days. We may explore the beautiful and historic Gunnerside Gill with visible reminders of the lead mining industry in the area. Stunning views through narrow natural gullies and valleys make this a popular walking favourite in popular Swaledale.
Fremington Ridgeline to Reeth – 10 miles /16kms
The views, the variety and the rewards make it all well worth the climb up to the ridge. This route takes us from Langthwaite up to this natural viewpoint with views down to the River Swale and across to Calver Hill. The grouse stick their distinctive heads up through the heather and the return walk runs alongside the water. Both Swaledale and Arkengarthdale are visited during the day.
Evening – Once walking kit is stowed away in the drying room, another delicious cake and hot showers are in order before a two course supper which is now much deserved.
Circular Walk taking in Castle Bolton, Carperby and Aysgarth Falls – 8 miles / 13 kms
After a good breakfast, we will again fill our flasks with warming drinks before heading off. This walk shows off the Dales with it’s historic sites, stunning waterfalls, riverside trails, Yorkshire villages, open moorland and woodland. It is a great mix of terrain and places of interestwithin Wensleydale.
The Leyburn Shawl (extended) – 8 miles / 13 kms
This historic and popular local walk runs along the top of the limestone crag to the village of Preston-Under-Scar and wends it’s way back low down in Wensleydale past Bolton Hall across pasture land to return to Leyburn. The day depends on how tired you are feeling already and whether you are keen to leave the cars behind for the day as the Shawl route means walking straight from the front door.
Evening – Henry will book you into a local restaurant for your last evening of the break where you can enjoy a meal together in Leyburn (pay individually.)
A leisurely breakfast before departure.
